TEOCALLI, A LOVELY NEW BED AND BREAKFAST IN TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE

Most people who visit the famous weaving town of Teotitlan del Valle do so as a day trip; it's just an hour's drive or bus ride from Oaxaca, and you can see at least a few of the weaving shops and galleries, grab a bite to eat, and get back to Oaxaca in a day.

However, more and more visitors from the US, Canada, Europe and other parts of Mexico are choosing to spend a night or more in this fascinating 500-year-old Zapotec pueblo to get more of a feeling for the place and its people, enjoy its community museum, colorful market, 16th Century church and other attractions, and explore its surroundings.

For anyone interested in getting to know Teotitlan and its friendly residents better, we can heartily recommend a small new bed-and-breakfast recently opened by an enterprising young couple, Malu Gonzalez and her husband, Alejandro MontaƱo. Both are Teotitlan natives and come from long-established Zapotec weaving families.

Teocalli Bed and Breakfast
in Teotitlan del Valle

Teocalli (which means dwelling place of the gods in Zapotec) has seven nicely furnished rooms, five of which have en-suite bathrooms, and two of which share a separate bathroom. It can accommodate up to 16 guests. The rooms surround a pleasant shaded courtyard where guests can gather for a continental breakfast or just hang out and relax. The courtyard also connects to a comfortable indoor sala and to a gallery featuring Alej's hand-woven tapetes and other crafts. The B-and-B is centrally located, within easy walking distance of Teotitlan's restaurants, shop, market and other galleries.

Malu and Alej live on the property, and are available to help guests make the most of their stay at the facility and in Teotitlan del Valle. Malu speaks excellent English. She and Alej could not be more accommodating.
